The history of crab rangoon goes back to the mid-20th century when tiki culture and Polynesian-themed restaurants were popular in the U.S. These spots usually featured a mix of Asian and American cuisines. Most sources credit crab rangoon to the Beverly Hills Polynesian-style restaurant, Trader Vicโ€™s.

Though they aren’t authentic to any particular Asian cuisine, the crispy, creamy, and savory combination has been a hit ever since. You often will find them among the appetizer options at many Chinese restaurants. Other names for them include crab puffs, cheese wontons and cream cheese rangoons.

These crab rangoon wonton cups are perfect for serving at parties or as a starter for a home-cooked meal. Their small size and satisfying flavor make them convenient for game nights, family gatherings and holiday celebrations.

What to serve with crab rangoon wonton cups

When planning your menu for a party or other casual gathering, consider serving these wonton cups to your guests alongside other appetizers like vegetable skewers, bacon-wrapped crackers, mini quiches, or a charcuterie board for well-rounded options.

For a sit-down meal, serve these wonton cups as a starter with a fresh salad and add grilled fish or shrimp, and a side of roasted broccoli for a delicious and healthy balance.

Beverage pairings can enhance the flavors of these crab rangoon cups, such as sparkling wine or champagne to complement the richness of the cream cheese. A light lager or pale ale gives a crisp contrast to the sweet crab meat.

Along those lines, sparkling water with a splash of fruit juice or a refreshing iced green tea goes well with them as non-alcoholic options.
